I'm hungry for more power! :) i am reading all about supercharger kits like the one vmax scart offer for the mpi. The kit looks great and after emailing them about it they say it will work fine with my engine and with the mods I currently have. I'm just interested to know has anyone on here any experience with the kit or similar kits? and how reliable are they, what mpg would be usual and most importantly do they dramatically decrease they life expectancy of an engine??

What Minis have you?: Mk1 Austin Mini,Mk3 Layland Mini,72Van,81 Clubman Estate, 87 Race carand a 2000 Rover Cooper.
Modifications: Mk1: 998 with flat top slipper pistons, 286 cam, 12G940 head 11:1 compression twin inch and a half SU's 5 speed gearbox. Mk3 998 automatic no mods, 72Van is a pile of rust, , Racer is being built but has the works and the 2000 rover cooper needs an engine again :(
Location: Dublin
There is a basic rule to more power you can only have it at the expensive of MPG and Engine longevity and power normally decreases those two by the Square of power in a percentage in lay mans terms if you make 1% more power you will lose 1% mpg and 1% engine life on the other hand if you make 2% more power you will lose 4% of your mpg and 4% of your total engine life and so one. a good example the life of a Race engine like those fitted the the cars in the Irish mini challenge is measured in hours not K of miles .

The bolt options are good on low millage engine just don't expect to get another 50,000 miles from you engine and expert to only get about another 20,000 miles from your gearbox if your lucky,

I know that sounds very drastic but there is no point lying to you thats the fact of high HP A series engine.

hi Merlin, don't worry its truth I'm after :D For me, forking out for a kit which producing great power but slashes the life expectancy of the engine just isn't worth it. What about these fully built turbo engines from minispeed and such for £2000, presumably they are built to handle high bhp figures and so would hold up well and have a decent life expectancy?? I'm just after a reliable fast engine. The vtec conversion is an option but i want to explore the a series options first (if there are any, :D ).what you reckon?

What size engine are you running at the mo? what mods have been done so far, just remember more BHP more emissions so you may not get the car past the NCT. I large bore A series (1380/1430) can make upwards of 100bhp comfortably. That in a mini is alot especially on the road.

Its the standard engine size of 1275cc with a stage 2 head with maniflow lcb and twin box exhaust. Also a K&N element in a modified original housing. Thats it at the moment. I was going to fit high lift rockers but I think it was Merlin who let me know that they wear out the cam very quickly so I decided against. I'll wait until I'm changing the cam to fit the rockers, and strengthen the gearbox while I'm at it. I just find the idea of taking out the engine a bit daunting.
