hi there
was just wondering what the best set up for the suspension is i have SPAX gas adjustables and hi lows.
at the moment i have the front 2-3 clicks softer than the back but i still have pretty useless understeer even at slow speeds!! the ride height is a bit lower than standard but still comfy.
my tires aren't bad but i do want more out of the suspension. its embarrasing for a mini t bo honest haha!!
if anybody fancies discussing it im mad for suggestions!
thanks

I have gaz adjustables and they are set to 3 on the front and 1 on the back. They used to be 6 on the front and 2 on the back and that was still a good compromise. I believe the dampers should be harder at the front than at the back?

If its understeering then you need softer at the front and harder at the back. Have you had camber, caster and toe checked ??

What suspension mods have you fitted ?

What is your tracking set to ?

Are your subframes in line ?

What subframe mounts are you using ?

Are the hi-lo's set level ?

What tyre pressure do you run ?

IMO your are going the wrong way about curing under steer,While Dampers do effect under steer they would not be my first port of call,

Despite the fallacy that minis handle fantastic out of the box the truth is that with out suspension mods they are severely limited by the treys which are available.

My Mk1 has no other suspension mods other than Coil Over and using AO-32 Yokohama tires on 6x10" wheels We took this around mondello Very recently and set some very good times for the small amount of HP the engine was putting out.

Setting the dampers harder at the rear than at the front you will induce an amount of under steer,

Answer these questions also something you need to take into account is driver error,

Under steer can be caused by corner enter speed to high, poor use of Acceleration trough the corner, bad road conditions,
regards
Paul.

Have to agree with paul, what the mini as standard is nt bad out of the box, I m running 12, 6 minilites on my car but my brother has 6, 10 revolutions on his car and the handleing is way better, minis were designed for 10s

i have the tyres set to about 2 psi all around and the hi lows are slightly higher on the back and the dampers are harder than the front.
i must get it on a track and set it up properly!! is it true the lower and harder the better!! i get mixed replies off ppl but what is actually better??

I take it you have made an error with your tyre pressure reading 2 psi would almost be dead flat, I would assume you mean 2 bar which is about 30 psi, as said above a mini on standard suspension geometry will handle badly when pushed, most minis will have positive camber front and rear which hampers cornering ability, usually camber/caster/toe will differ side to side and front/rear. This can only be sorted with aftermarket suspension kit. As for damper setting the whole idea of having the front hard and the rear soft is so the back will follow the front (i.e. under extreme conditions will produce oversteer). Thus meaning when you do suffer understeer usually on entry into the corner you can overcome it with power oversteer if the settings are right. (not to be tried on public roads). Lowering the car with standard suspension will again cause changes to the geometry. All can and will lead to a bad handling car.
