from what ive been reading, the council arent liable if the pothole has just formed on its own

but if theyve tried to fix it and it reappeared i can claim on shoddy workmanship kinda?!?!

Be the lord thats bad! Sorry to see that Buddy, I hope all goes well.

I remember this happen to the mother in her Civic out near DoonyBrook. She had only bought a new set of 17' Toora multispokes and made s**t of the front drivers side wheel. She took a picture of the pot hole and the wheel and sent the letter to the council, and when she was on the way to work two days later the hole was filled. She then wrote another letter in anger and sent a copy of the receipt of her wheels to them and after a couple of weeks receved the payment for the wheel and a letter of apoligy. If you keep at them you have a better chance but I was just talking to her and she said 'write the letter asap and tell them you are going to get the estimate and keep at them and don't give up!'

aha but that where i can counteract..

the holes are obstructed by an island in the road, its a very sharp turn just where they are, so you can see then until youve come aroudn the island and avoiding them is impossible at that point...

the two red dots on the map below

I'm just back from Clare street now, myself and the mother went for a drive to have a look for over-done christmas lights! We didn't find very many but back to the point, I'm surprised you still have your Mini! Even in the Passat it was a big bump!

When I saw those holes I was expevting you to say your sump got crushed

Defp write into them, they are responsible for the upkeep of the roads.

Ive to nct my car every year now.

Do they test the roads every year? NO!

Are the materials used to surface the roads sub standard? It appears so.

i succesfully claimed for a wrecked wheel and bent suspension on an MG maestro my wife had when she hit a road repair that had washed away, on the merrion road in dublin. i went back later that night and took photos of the thing (it was about 7 inches deep and 2 feet across.) using a measuring tape as scale. I submitted that along with the repair bill. I go the initial "not our fault" letter then i phoned them and explained i was prepared to instruct a solicitor.
the cheque and apology arrived inside a week.
this was before the small claims court came into being. As i understand this will only work if the council have repaired the road: wont work if its normal wear and tear.

on a related matter, the "speed-bumps" on the newly opened monkstown ring road are in a 50kph zone: i tried them at 50kph in a mini and nearly lost control of the car.... anyone else find them specially dangerous?

(ps: the maestro broke my heart trying to keep the twin 40DCNF carbs in tune!)

take it to a mini guy... worth checking the drive-shaft and CV joints too. also the suspension & steering will need to be checked for geometry.

I'm not sure which is more upsetting, the state of the roads in our nations capital or Keith finally coming out about his Maestro.

I agree with you there Keith, they are quite severe.

I've heard Connor Faughnan (spelling?) from the AA on various radio stations talking about this, questioning the safety criteria this is based on: he seemed to imply it was a coercive move to extract more money from motorists & encourage the early scrapping of otherwise perfectly safe vehicles, for the benefit of the car sales companies.
whereas IMOC is too small to campaign on its own perhaps we should join with other car clubs, enthusiasts, online forums and even the green party to reject this opportunistic move to punish the older vehicle.

I would say I'd do that but I'm only 17. I still sickened by this! That is no possible way I could put my Mini through the N.C.T EVERY YEAR! Every time I get the car back from fixing it something else breaks! :(
