as some of you may no i am a nightmare with engines in my mini (rings seem to go on 4 engines) so i took my engine out striped it down to the block just the crank rods and pistons left in it . now hear is the funny part i only checked the head yesterday and it turns out 1 of the valves needs to be re seated .i turned the head upside down and put petrol in to the head and the 2nd cylinder empty'd in 2 seconds so now my engine is striped down but other than the low compression on number 2 the engine was sweet and came apart really easy not a tap or click out of it ....so should i replace the rings anyway and the bearings or just hone it out and sort the head .i havent realy got the money to do the rings but if i have to i will .... the clutch is new along with the water pump and the cylinders are perfect i put oil down the cylinders a over a week ago and by the looks of it it was all stil there until i cleaned it out and filed with petrol that did go down but not in the first hour it must have went over night im stuck as to what to do next should i just clean everyting and refit ? also there is no weir on the cam or crank + rods and pistons look to be perfect

i no its kinda stupid 1 to ask but i just wana be sure

please dont reply saying that im tick for not checking the head as i already feel fairly stupid lol

thanks in advance

When you look int the bores cleaned can you still see the cross hatch marks or are their virtical scratches??... you should realy only need to replace the rings if you see scratching, otherwise i'd say your's would be fine.....

What Minis have you?: Mk1 Austin Mini,Mk3 Layland Mini,72Van,81 Clubman Estate, 87 Race carand a 2000 Rover Cooper.
Modifications: Mk1: 998 with flat top slipper pistons, 286 cam, 12G940 head 11:1 compression twin inch and a half SU's 5 speed gearbox. Mk3 998 automatic no mods, 72Van is a pile of rust, , Racer is being built but has the works and the 2000 rover cooper needs an engine again :(
Location: Dublin
Dont Even think of puting it back together with out changing the rings and honing the block its a no brainer IMO, a ring pack from minispars is 40 euros and a hone cost you nothing.

get the valves reseated professionally in the likes of Howard Engineering they only charge 50 euros and it will probably improve the motors power by 20% very worth wile

in that case are you sure your problem is the piston rings and not just the head??
