There may be nothing wrong with your new belt only that it has come loose. If you can wiggle the belt more than 1cm up or down, it's loose. If you have a Haynes manual, it will explain how to tighten it up. It's a 5-minute job.

Hope it helps,

Billy

What Minis have you?: 1976 saloon , 1275cc, White with black roof. Converted to Discs on the cheap so stuck with 12"s for now.
Throw some water on the Fan Belt while it's screeching.
If the noise stops, or changes, then you can be pretty sure it's the Belt.
If so, tighten it slightly and the screeching should stop.

could also be the bearing in the water pump... it stops after a while because the thing heats up with the engine water. you can use a hose held to your ear to try and pin-point the source of the sound.

Tommy,

Delighted you got sorted so easily. Just be sure you don't overtighten the tension on the belt as it will put stress on the water pump bearing as Keith mentioned above. Make sure there's up to 1cm play in the belt.
