Well over the last few months I have been deliberating about what route to go with My Mk1, the way I seen it was that I had a few options open to me,
1: Restore it to original (Not really my style)
2: Make it a Cooper S replica ( I think its been done to death)
3: Make and Ex Works Replica of it ( again done a bit and not really my style)

SO I settled on
4: This Option is to make what is know in some parts as a Tin top road/racer. What this will mean is, the car is going to get any FIA trimmings such as role cage, fire extinguisher, 4 point Harness, and Race seat, but still remain road legal. In A nut shell a Road Legal Historic Racer.

The Idea Harks back to the way people in Ireland would have gone Racing back in the day . They would soup up there road car with a bigger engine better brakes, soft compound tires wider wheels and fit some shape of a role cage. Then drive to the circuit take out there carpets and back seats, get the tools and jack from the boot and go out on the track racing.

I think this is fantastic and really appeals to me, it is also means the car is great for track days and going to shows.

So what is the spec going to be,

Cooper S 7.5" on the front and some Mini Fins on the Rear

7 Gallon Tank
Facsit Red top pump
Adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator

Wheels:
10" X 6 Starmags
A032 Tires

Safety Stuff:
4/6 Point role cage
FIA seat
FIA Harness
FIA Fire Extinguisher

I have 90% of the bits collected or near enough, I have cut back some other projects so I hope to get this on the boil over the winter and have it ready for early next year.

Well I have started gathering bits,
KAD Alloy Flywheel and Back Plate

74mm Omega Cast Pistons and A set of Cooper S rods

The real deal none of your MG Midget yokes lol

Steel EN40B 86mm stroke Crank on Standard bearing sizes in mint condition been wedged crossed drilled and bladed

A cylinder Head I have been working on for some months as you can see I have done huge port worked and I have also totally reshaped the combustion chambers




A nice set of MED 1.5 roller rocker, Paul Ivey 37.5mm inlets and 31.5 Exhaust's MED Piper Race valve springs.

Mini Spares Cross pin diff with 4.1 CWP

Thats all I have managed to collect up for now Hopefully I will get a chance to collect the block and other bits by the end of the week then I can Get to putting the short motor together

i need to get a towel im drooling that much.... cant wait to see her finished...

the wheels are split rims 7 inches wide i think

Sounds very similar to my motor Paul except mines a 1430 not 1480, what box are you going to run? and output shatfs? And carb I spose a 45 Weber or split Weber? Or maybe a 48? What grind camshaft are you thinking?

Its a 86mm stroke crank, I am going to be running a mini Spares Straight cut box the ST gear set and ider a Quafe or Salisbury diff output shafts will be the mini spares Limo to Pot joint ones and standard drive shafts with the pot joint.
the carb will be a Weber 45 on a 6 inch manifold and the MED ITG filter kit

Nice setup, yep M/S SCCR box in mine to with M/S SC drop gears, you going for an LSD diff and not the cross pin? Is this for the road or track? I've never been a fan of the old pot joints, lots of spinning mass and tend to break under load generated during accelerative cornering, also quick get aways, remember blowing one to bits off the start line in a race, the car covered a whole 50m before all the oil had drained from the box. I much prefer a UJ setup, more reliable. Should have mine on the road after christmas.

You can get the pot joints machined down to accept the outer part of the hardy spicer joint, perhaps it is the best of both worlds ?
