Hi all, new to the forum and minis.

I just bought an Austin Mini 850 that has been sitting in a shed for 10 years.

DoneDeal link: http://cars.donedeal.ie/vintagecars-for ... 50/6496474

Car has no battery and I reckon the battery from my golf GTI would be too powerful, so hasn't been started.

So Good points with the car: Bodywork appears in good nick, no obvious dents, a few flakes of paint missing but nothing major. Interior is in great nick, much better than in the pics on the DoneDeal ad, only a tear in the drivers seat.

Bad points: brakes are out of action atm, handbrake works(ish) though, Electrics: unknown, and obviously the engine hasn't been started.

How should I go about getting the engine going again? I'm thinking that it will probably need new seals/gaskets as they could be perished. Hopefully the plan is to do all of this myself, I've got decent enough experience working on cars, and I'm going to the a Hanes manual

And seeing as this is my first vintage/classic car. I'm guessing that it does't run on unleaded petrol. What additive do people recommend?

Cheers!

Welcome to the forum, next thing you should do is join the club.
The ad has been removed from the link above so stick up a few pictures.
Golf battery will be fine, no such thing as too powerfull once its 12 volts.
Pour some oil into the bores through the sparkplug hole and leave for a few days. Then with the plugs still removed try turning the engine by hand using the fanbelt, if that doesn't work put in gear and rock car foward and back, once you get it moving a few revolutions then you can try starting it. If it was in running order the only seals you may have to replace will be driveshaft output seals and rocker cover gasket.
Good luck with it.
