I brought the MPi in for its NCT retest which it passed and was on my way home when there was a sound like gravel underneath the car so I pulled in pronto. Once I stopped, there was a huge pool of oil underneath the car, apparently coming from behind the gearbox. I got home a spin home and came back with my transporter. Once I had added some oil, the engine started up normally and I was able to select reverse and first and drive it up onto the transporter.

Now that it's home, I looked underneath and there's no obvious hole but clearly something has caused it to lose all its all.

Any suggestions?

Billy

I would be with Bert on this sounds like the dif pin has let go top it up to the max mark with oil and take it for a very short spin if it pulls to the left or right then I would be almost certin the dif pin has or is letting go.

Says the man who took a decade to build the Marcos. And I know it was you who fixed the driveshaft in the end but you were there when it broke also.

The hardy spicer coupling has 8 nuts to undo and replace, so thats an average of 2 nuts per month, or 336 hours per nut.

So I'd expect the engine to be out of the car by mid 2011.

Lads,

Your support in my hour of need is touching. All I need is another club event that Neil needs a Mini for and I'll get the diff fixed for free.

Poured some oil into it just now and the oil leak is very obvious. The sump is badly cracked!

Something internal must have let go. Either way, yes it's change the gearbox time. I'll stay with the MPI 'box as the long gearing makes for easy cruising.
