rite some may think this is a stupid question but im clueless when it comes to the difference
i was looking at a 1275 engine and on the back where the tappet chest covers would be on a 998 are not there its blank ? also there isnt an engine number plate its kinda stamped/eched into the block where the plate normally is so is it an older engine or newer type ... i never taught of taking the casting number on engine number ??? any info please

What Minis have you?: Traveller
Turbo
Hornet
Equinox
MINI Clubman
Location: LOUTH
If you find a 1275 with tappet chest covers you've hit the jackpot, Cooper S.
The later engines have the number stamped directly on the block not a plate.
If you put up the number we can tell you what you got.

Some English Engine Tuners stamp the block too. Mines from minispeed and has MSXXXXXXXXX stamped where the Engine plate should be.

I would say yes ,the going rate for one (heard running) is about €600 these days. Check what you can like it spins over and the like and take a chance . Its worth 2 even for the parts if you have to split it

The Mpi Wont have a distributor drive.

Spi is a little different, I think they have a crank sensor on the flywheel housing? but still has a distributor. Whats the number on the dizzy if there is one?
What does the Thermostat housing look like? Does it have a sandwich plate between it and the head or does it just bolt straight to the head?

100% its a 1275 i'm nearly certain a metro unit, maybe a gold/silver seal stamped block.... the plate could have been removed on a skimming of the block. my metro unit says wfm1024 and silver seal...

you can, however i think its more complicated than just hooking up the carbs instead of the throttle body, I think it needs a different Dizzy and a few other parts.
