Ain't I right in saying that cars before 1/1/1980 are nct exempt and that's it. I keep seeing people put up 1981/ 1982 mini's up for sale saying that there are nct exempt. This is not the case. It doesn't matter if your car is over 30 years of age. It has to be before 1/1/80. Just anyone buying a early 80's car watch this, otherwise you may nct ur car every year.

All cars registered from 1st January 1980 must undergo an NCT. See the official NCT text below

3. What cars must be tested and how often?

All cars four years and older must undergo an NCT. The NCT due date is calculated by reference to the date of first registration of the car with tests due every two years for cars younger than 10 years.

Annual NCT for cars 10 years and older commencing 1st June 2011. This means that all cars presented for their 10th anniversary or subsequent NCT on or after 1st June 2011 will receive a certificate valid for up to one year only

5. Are any cars exempt from the NCT?
Motor vehicles used only on islands not connected to the mainland by road and motor vehicles belonging to the Armed Forces, the Garda Síochana or the Fire Service are currently not subject to mandatory roadworthiness testing.
Vehicles registered before 1980 are also exempt from the test.

Yeah, its true. Their excuse is that cars of that time are more reliable than the older ones. Every car after 1980 has to undergo an NCT..unless its on the old style Irish plates because they cant register those in the NCT system aparently according to one of the VAG drivers I know. Feel free to correct me if thats wrong though! :)

I also genuinely thought the NCT centre just hadnt updated their page since last year for the exemption.
